as Jesus is

Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect. ” Matthew 5:48

An amazing chapter in the Gospels is Matthew 5, as Jesus procliams the Beatitudes and how followers of Him are called to live, He ends it by placing a call on us that we are to be perfect as our Father in heaven is perfect.

wow…we are called to be perfect? yet do we even strive to attain perfection or do we try to justify why we don’t need to be by saying “well I am human, I am a sinner so therefore I can’t attain perfection here on earth”

I genuinely believe that we can obtain perfection here on earth. I belive that the kingdom of heaven is a state in which we can rest in and the presence of the Lord is also there- I don’t believe we have to wait until we are dead to dwell in heaven for I believe that wherever the Lord dwells and manifests is His Kingdom of Heaven. Therefore when Jesus calls us to be perfect as His father in Heaven is perfect-if His fathers home is within us, then perfection is obtainable through the Father.

“Neither shall they say, See here! or, see there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you” Luke 17:21

We come to the conclusion that we can’t be perfect because we look at it from a wordly persepective-we see it as a state in which we are placing ourselves above others, that we are some sort of gods if we obtain perfection. although I should clairfy that those who strive to obtain worldy perfection are merely doing it to gain something whether it be success, wealth, to be noticed by others, to gain a status, to be liked and loved. but we must come to see that we ourselves cannot obtain perfection and it musn’t be something we turn our focus on. For I believe it comes by submitting one self to the character of Christ, to pressing on to be the person Christ died for you to be. It is pressing on to obtain all the Jesus had embraced and matured into.

Not that I have already obtained, or am already made perfect: but I press on, if so be that I may lay hold on that for which also I was laid hold on by Christ Jesus.” Philippians 3:12

Perfection is a process in which becoming fully Spirit filled and led. It is coming to a state in which we are allowing the work of the Holy Spirit perfect us into the image and likeness of God.

“And we, who with unveiled faces all reflect the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his likeness with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.” 2 Corinthians 3:17

“for it is God who works in you to will and to act according to his good purpose” Philippians 2:13

Even Paul could see that there was more to being empowered by the Spirit and it would come at a great cost of fully submitting himself to the Lord. For our God is a God of abundance and desires us to be completely whole in Him

And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing” James 1:4

We also must come to see that coming to a state of perfection is not out of pride or self-righteousness but from our deep desire and love to be formed into the image and likeness of God. It is about dying to our flesh so that His sprit may be complete in and through us.

“Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ.” colossians 3:23-24

Even Jesus had to go through a process of maturity to obtain perfection

“Son though he was, he learned obedience from what he suffered and, once made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him” Hebrews 5:8-9

which if we are choosing to live by the truth and word of God then we too can obtain the fullness, but we must not let our human understanding limit us from gaining a divine character,

And the God of all grace, who called you unto his eternal glory in Christ, after that ye have suffered a little while, shall himself perfect, establish, strengthen you” 1 Peter 5:10

For our Jesus is desiring to be glorified through us and as we obey Him may you allow the Lord to perfect you through the faith and be brought into His likeness.

“Now may the God of peace who brought up our Lord Jesus from the dead, that great Shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant, make you complete in every good work to do His will, working in youwhat is well pleasing in His sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen.” Hebrews 13:20-21
