the word we throw around so easily is one of the hardest words we could even begin to describe. it is a word that we have placed many labels and faces to but may have not even come close to fully understanding the truth and depth to it. and thats where we make a mistake-we are trying to grasp an understanding of something rather than seeking the one in which this word originates from. Love is the driving force of most of our lives-we seek to be loved, to find love and feel love. we seek to fill the emptiness and missing pieces of our hearts with a love for something. whether it be a love for the work we do, a love for another being, a love for life or a love for yourself. all of us are seeking a love that goes beyond any earthly filler we try to fill that void within our hearts.
when reading this morning, it was as if I read it with new eyes “This is what real love is: It is not our love for God; It is God’s love for us. He sent His son to die in our place to take away our sins” 1 John 4:10
I was stunned to think that all this time I was trying to deepen my love for God-to do things to love him more, seeking him more so I could understand him more, serving Him so I could be seen as someone who loves God because I obey Him. But yet love doesn’t always need to be understood, it doesn’t always need to make sense. Even as the chapter goes on in 1 John , it goes on to say that our love for God grows because He loved us first (1 John 4:19)
All this time we have placed love as a word to describe feeling when it is God Himself. It is an act of unconditonal movement in which we step into a divine realm. Even as it says “if people say ‘I love God’ but hate their brothers or sisters..whom they have seen, cannot love God, whom they have never seen. And God gave us this command: Those who love God must also love their brothers and sisters” 1 John 4:20-21
We place a label that love is merely an action, emotion, feeling based on the amount of love we have for that person. We only show we love someone if they show they love us, or because they are similar to us. We don’t see love as something that goes beyond ourselves. Love is not merely an act or emotion, Love should be in all things because God is love (John 4:8) Love is the motive of God Himself driving us to open doors for Himself to be revealed and manifested. Love is the driving force of actions that go beyond understanding and explanation. Love isn’t always something that is seen but is clearly being shown when others are being compelled to do those same acts-to care for one another as it is they themselves. When we are to love one another, I believe it is to step out of the earthly mindset of what we have labelled love as and into the Kingdom in which love is the air we breathe, the water we drink, what our souls are pouring out. Love is the thoughts we think, the words we speak and the tune to our lifes song. It directs our footsteps and leaves a trail of proclaming Christ.
But how do we walk out of this way of loving and into heavenly thinking-into the Kingdom in which love would be what God is. I believe it is for us to seek God first, to truly spend time reading His Word, Praying, Worshiping-Praising and Listening to Him. How can we love someone if we don’t spend time with them? If we don’t listen to what they desire? If we aren’t allowing ourselves to be filled with the very thing we are seeking? As we are seeking to be filled by God (His Holy Spirit) love will naturally be poured into us as well.Simply if we desire to be moved by love-we must be walking with the Lord. By seeking more of the Lord, we will have a greater understanding of the power within us of His Holy Spirit and as we begin to be Spirit led rather than led by our flesh, we will begin to see in new light. As we are no longer blinded by the thoughts of the flesh, and humbling ourselves under God’s mighty hand so that He may be seen through us, for if God is love (1 John 4:8) than when He is seen-there is love. We must let go of all understanding so we may have a renewed and transformed mind-away from an earthly mindset and into a Kingdom state of thinking. (Romans 12:2)
Love isn’t simply doing things for it to be recongnized as love, Love should not be a motive or something to achieve. It should come forth easily and be seen when we are walking in the light of Jesus Christ and being empowered by a God who is love itself. Our love as followers of Christ should go beyond what others can see, they should be able to feel it and know that it is not simply an act but being brought by a divine being. Through all our acts, if God is empowering us-He will always be brought glory, for we wouldn’t be capable of showing such things. For how can people see God if their hearts aren’t being opened by seeing His love through those claiming to follow Him?
“But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” Matthew 6:33
“My Children, we should love people not only with words and talk but by our actions and true caring” 1 John 3:18
